Founded by Booker T Washington. He contended that economic self-sufficiency would pay off at a future date. Thus, he founded the Tuskegee Institute to teach various trades. Kind of a "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" type thing. Said black people and white people had similar goals in rebuilding the South. Argued that black people should stay in the South and not go North. Wrote "Up from Slavery." Was criticized by other black intellectuals for being too conservative and conciliatory to white demands. Washington was both praised as a race leader and pilloried as an accommodationist to America's unjust racial hierarchy.
