After gold was found in South Dakota, settlers flooded into Sioux territory, violating previous negotiations. The gov tried to get the Sioux to sign over the Black Hills area where the gold was while Gen Sheridan was secretly moving troops nearby. Initially, the Sioux won several victories led by leader Sitting Bull. More Sioux joined in. June 1876 Colonel George Custer attacked what he thought was a small village in Little Bighorn, but had actually grown quite large with various native refugees. He was easily defeated and 268 of his men were killed. The gov was outraged. Sent in reinforcements. The native forces scattered, the last surrendering in 1881. Last of the major conflicts with Natives on the Plains.
