Neuralink was founded in 2016 by Elon musk and Max Hodak and publicly disclosed in 2017. The company aims for what Mr. Musk calls “neural lace” technology, implanting tiny brain electrodes into brains so that a computer and a brain can communicate directly. The company announced that their brain-machine interface could treat neural disorders and enhance our brain in the future. Elon Musk stated that it would make us competitive against Artificial Intelligences.
Yet the company has lots of technical or ethical problems to solve; they reported some progress on their Brain-Machine Interfaces. In 2020 August, Neuralink revealed their implant demo tested on pigs. They demonstrated neurons firing inside the pigs’ brains and presented the surgery robot, a machine that performs the implant surgery on the brain. But it wasn’t very much a notable event because other medical brain-machine interfaces could do the same or better. In the first roadmap that neuralink announced, human trials would start in 2020, but it was delayed. In early 2021, media reported that neuralink might begin testing on humans later in the year. Musk wrote that neuralink is currently working with FDA to ensure its safety.
