Founded in 1866 in TN. Lots of Southern elite, but also gang members and confederate guerilla groups. Had a big reputation. Lots of other hate groups, but fell under the umbrella of the KKK. Targets were usually black, but also included white Republicans, especially politicians. Victims numbered in the thousands. Went unchecked for quite a while. Democratic congressman would often try to deny the violence was happening, saying the Republicans were exaggerating it.
