Ulysses S. Grant (Stalwart R) vs Horatio Seymour (D). Grant runs on a platform of preserving the squo, Seymour promises to repeal reconstruction. Grant wins, thanks to black southern voters. Many black state government candidates were elected across the south. Participated in state constitutional conventions as well. Passed public education provisions and opened public institutions like hospitals, orphanages, and mental asylums to white and black citizens (though usually segregated). Hiram Revels and Blanche K Bruce elected as senators from MI and 1000 other black Americans were elected to state positions.
