Fractured Democratic party runs two candidates. South runs former VP John C. Breckenridge. Others run Douglas. Republicans nominate Lincoln. Less polarizing than some of the others. Constitutional Unionists run John Bell. Lincoln in narrowly elected, aided by the fact that the South had divided between 2 candidates. Lincoln runs on a platform of anti-slavery, but NOT abolition (yet). Most Southern states didn't even put his name on the ballot. Breckenridge second, then Bell, then Douglas. Highest voter turn out ever (80%). South begins to talk of secession.
