Upton Sinclair released his book, The Jungle, which exposed the meatpacking industry and horrified the public as it demonstrated their lack of sanitation. This caused such a commotion that Congress passed 2 laws in 1906 known as the Pure Food and Drug act which made it illegal to manufacture, sell, and transport mislabeled food. Also, The Meat Inspection act was created which stated that inspectors from the government had to visit meatpacking factories to make sure that they are working in a clean area and their food is clean and safe for the public.
