1 ene 1867 año - International Darwinism; Imperialism; Missionaries

Descripción:

During this time Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest played a major role in the imperialism because nations were competing against others over who had the most power. This concept was called international Darwinism and it was a major motive of their pursuit of imperialism. However, Americans were not the only ones that wanted to achieve political or economic control over other countries. Countries such as Japan, France, Britain, Russia, Germany, etc, wanted to have influence over countries that were in weaker circumstances. The United States saw this imperialistic movement as a threat and decided that they needed to do the same in order to avoid being considered a second-class power; therefore, they decided to use individual such as journalists, missionaries, and politicians too begin this American expansion. Missionaries played a major role in helping imperialism. Reverend Josiah Strong used the theory of Darwinism in which he explained that individual’s part of the Anglo-Saxon group was the fittest to survive. He preaches this in his book, Its Possible Future and Present Crisis, in which he also stated that these individuals hide a religious responsibility to go to other lands and help them by spreading Christianity. Missionaries did exactly that in which they traveled to less fortunate places such as Africa, Asia, and the Pacific islands which influenced the government to participate in foreign affairs.
