New anti-slavery party after Liberty Party failed. Very racist grounding for anti-slavery. Many in the party wanted an end to slavery because they thought black people were stealing white jobs. They also opposed westward expansion of slavery because they wanted the area to be white only. Others in the party did oppose slavery on moral grounds, but many didn't.
