Lee of the confederacy decided to take offensive action by leading an army into Maryland and Pennsylvania. His goals were to capture a major northern city or destroy the union but he wanted to force the union to call for peace. The invading army surprised Union forces in Gettysburg in what was the most crucial battle of the civil war with 50,000 casualties. The confederate forces got demolished and what was destroyed was a key part of the confederate army.
