Many lands were acquired after the war to grow cotton, but their demand for it was reduced by world markets. This has caused many farmers to lose their land and be sold to rich landowners who use sharecropping. This caused small farmers to fall into debt and the economy to worsen. Farmers will also go and try to grow various crops to earn more income. This is significant because it explains how the private interests of the upper class and white supremacy ended up being a long-term failure.
