By improving the railroads and attempting to boost their economy, the South was trying to start over. They were starting to industrialize, similar to the North. Alabama became one of the country's largest steel manufacturers, Virginia became the tobacco hub, and in the textile industry, the Carolinas and Georgia were booming. Their improved labor contributed to the desire to construct more infrastructure and thus to overall growth
