In response to French aggression and fear of French spies. Alien act allowed government to deport foreign nationals they deemed dangerous. Sedition act allowed gov to prosecute anyone who spoke "false, scandalous, or malicious" things about the gov. Supported by feds. DRs though it was an overreach of federal power. Important because this established the precedent of free speech, unless said speech is dangerous.
