10 mayo 1801 año - Barbary Pirates
Descripción:
Jefferson’s foreign policy came into conflict with the piracy conducted in the Barbary states. The Barbary pirates were Muslim pirates and privateers from North Africa. The Barbary
States practiced piracy to increase the economy of each country. The pirates would steal vessels for ransom and sell captured sailors into slavery at times. In exchange for defending U.S. merchant ships from Barbary pirates, President Washington and Adams paid compensation to the Barbary nation. The ruler of Tripoli, however, wanted a greater amount of compensation from Jefferson to the Barbary
governments. Instead of paying, Jefferson sent a small U.S. Navy fleet to the Mediterranean, leading to occasional battles with Tripoli. In the Barbary Wars, the United States Navy consisted of three ships, so it was not an easy battle. Although the American navy suffered a loss, they did gain respect and protection
from U.S. vessels that traded in the Mediterranean seas. The United States saw the need for a large navy to safeguard American shipping after the Barbary Wars. As an overseas military force, the Marine Corps
was established and the United States will no longer allow assaults on American trade. The Barbary Wars provided the strength for the young country to speak on its behalf and start developing its name as a strong country.
