The Baroque era occurred between the years 1600 and 1750 to mark the birth of opera and Johann Sebastian Bach’s death. Most music written in this era had extramusical connections, like in the Renaissance era. The Baroque era brought the introduction of tonality: where the piece is centered around a specific key. Most music was not written using modes.This was due to a new form of tuning keyboard instruments called equal temperament. Polyphonic texture was almost always used, and ritornello and binary form were popular. Improvisation and terraced dynamics were often used in pieces. In this era, instrumental music began to have more importance. It was equal to vocal music. However, music was only really used in masses or at aristocratic events. Popular genres from the Baroque era include concertos, operas, cantatas, oratorios, masses, toccatas, fugues, allemandes, sarabandes, gigues, gavottes, and more. Some of the primary instruments used were harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, recorder, cornett, trombone, timpani, and tambourine.
