This Bureau provided food and shelter for black people and poor white people, those that were made destitute by the war. It had the authority to resettle freed african americans on confiscated farm land, but President Johnson gave back confederate farm owners their land back. The bureau made a huge impact on education for poor people and freed slaves. Many were taught how to read and schools were funded.
