Confederate leaders depended on foreign countries to fund the war since cotton was their cash crop and it would aid the war effort. Britain depended on cotton for their textile mills but British aristocracy members wanted to see America divide due to its democracy. The Union did not want the Confederacy gaining support from Britain or France and giving it recognition.
