The senate knew about Kansas’ issues and in 1856, Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner verbally attacked the democratic administration. Preston Brooks defended his uncle and beat Charles Sumner in the head in the Senate. Northerners were mad but southerners were not. The tensions on each side grew.
