- Based on the story, the director Hayao Miyazaki told the film was inspired by when he spent his vacation at a mountain cabin with his family and five girls who were friends of the family. The bathhouse was inspired in Miyazaki’s hometown and thought of it as a mysterious place. The film included some Japanese myths in the background characters.
- It became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history with a total of ¥31.68 billion ($305 million USD), alongside “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Ponyo” made by the same studio.
- Has won many awards from 2001 to 2003, making it the highest-ranking animated film and, it was also named the "Best Film of the 21st Century So Far" by The New York Times.
