After setting sail from Spain on August 3, 1492, Columbus and his three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria reached land in the Bahamas. When he went ashore, he would find the Taino people and continue to explore the islands for 96 days and then claiming it as Spanish territory by setting up their flag there.
