East Germany supposedly built a concrete wall to "prevent Western Fascists from entering the East". In reality, the wall was to obstruct defection to the West.

Significance: The wall was a symbol of the oppression people faced under the Communist regime. Its construction blacked many people from their family, friends and jobs for over a decade.
