The Berlin Wall had appeared overnight as a result of thousands of refugees from east Berlin going over to west Berlin. The wall was made to prevent the influence of west Berlin and to keep the people of west Berlin isolated. It was hoped by the east that the western powers would give up on attempting to supply and keep the citizens of west Berlin safe. IF the west gave up, then that allowed the east to fully claim all of Berlin and establish their control over it. The roads going in and out of west Berlin were blocked and the only way in was to fly.
