1 oct 1842 año - Conflicts Over Texas, Maine, Oregon, Texas
Descripción:
Mexico won its independence, an American bought land in Texas and had Americans move into the land. Tensions rose when Mexicans wanted to outlaw slavery and have everyone convert to Roman Catholicism, also they wanted to ban any more americans coming into the land. Maine: There was an ill-defined boundary between Canada and Maine and conflicts arose between the two, causing the “battle of the maps”, which was soon resolved in the treaty of 1842. Oregon: Oregon was claimed by 4 countries. Many British settlers lived in the North of the Columbia River. Americans believed that it was their manifest destiny to take Oregon and Texas and for Mexico to give up California. Americans began to migrate to California to play the Texas game.
Speech in the US Senate: Thomas Hart Benton: Thomas Hart Benton: This explains how Thomas Hart Benton said that with the Hudson Bay Company from Great Britain, the government was completely supportive of emigration to Oregon, even if it turns aggressive. This shows the country's growing nationalism, which encouraged political leaders to appeal to gain more power from expansionists.
