The later Ming emperors wanted to protect the regions that they owned by building new defenses, which included the Great Wall of China, along the northern border. This was achieved through hundreds of thousands of laborers throughout the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to build an intimidating stone and brick wall that ran about 2500 kilometers long and 10-15 meters high. It featured watch towers, signal towers, and accommodations for troops deployed on the border.
