In July of 1942, Germany suffered a great lost at the Soviet city of Stalingrad (now known as Volgograd). This was the first major defeat for the Germans in World War II and stopped Nazi advances into Eastern Europe and Russia. Both sides would suffer from great lost with a number of Russian causalities. However, many German soldiers will be captured and taken as prisoners of war during this battle, changing the tides in the War.
