John Lewis of the United Mine Workers approached theAaFL to merge together. The AFL which consisted of craft union rejected this idea. Lewis then founded the CIO which recruited worked without respect of gender, race, religion. The CIO organized a sit down strike against General Motors and in response GM had local police try to evict strikers. The strikers fought back and were supported by their wive by providing food and water. The government did not get involved and after 6 weeks GM acknowledged defeat and recognized the UAW. The formation of the CIO is significant because it eventually led to the enactment of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
