Smith's clams that he received revelations that permitted polygamy, he was arrested in Illinois, and a mob lynched him. As a result, Brigham Youn, a Mormon missionary, became the new prophet of Mormonism and led 12,000 Mormons to settle near the Great Salt Lake. This soon became the Utah Territory and Young established a Mormon theocracy where people could practice polygamy. The significance of the founding of Mormonism is that it established the precedence in the United States of the freedom of countering establishment religion, and forming new organized churches.
