The Stamp Act was the first internal direct tax for America. It taxed all paper documents in the colonies. The act required that legal documents and printed materials must bear a tax stamp provided by commissioned distributors who would collect the tax in exchange for the stamp. This was to help pay off the debt from the Seven Years war.
