Religion spread over great distances (due to missionaries) to many different tribes including Germanic tribes (like the Vandals, Franks and Visigoths) and the Vikings. The Roman Catholic church came to dominate most societies in Europe. Across Europe churches, cathedrals, monasteries and nunneries were built providing many things to a community including education, healthcare, spiritual guidance and support and the understanding of many aspects of the world (as most could not read). In order to gain control over key religious sites known as the Holy Land, the Christians and Muslims fought in a series of wars known as the Crusades. Tens of thousands of people volunteered to fight from across Europe, at request from the Pope.
