The Maastricht Treaty officially formed the EU, the final evolution of many additions and inclusions from the ECSC to the EEC to the EC and now the EU. This is the final, and current form of European Unity and essentially creates a combined economy and tariff system with open borders between member nations. It also created a unified defense and credit system with the Euro as the international currency. The EU today is arguably more unified than the United States, as they continue to work towards a "one country" Europe.
