At the very end of the 13th century BCE, Pharaoh Merenptah (first regnal year: 1226–1215 cal year BCE40) sent the earliest known shipment of grains in the form of famine aid3,26 to the Hittites. This vital import of food had reached sizable proportions, as revealed by the words ‘grain to be taken in ships, to keep alive this land of Hatti’ (KRI IV 5.3).
