With the Suez Canal project completed in late 1857, the French Empire began serious colonial efforts in the Far East, along the Chinese and South East Asian coasts.

Ernest Doudart de Lagrée (1823-1868) was chosen for an expedition up the Mekong river in what would eventually become known as the region of Indochina.

Starting from Saigon, which had fallen under French control in 1858, Lagrée explored the Mekong all the way up to about the location of the city of Vientiane, including many of the river's numerous tributaries.

De Lagrée's endeavor would be the first step in French colonization of Indochina.
