The Soviet Union managed to catch up to the United States in terms of deadly weaponry with the successful recreation of the atomic bomb in 1949. This placed the Soviet Union and the United States in the awkward position of having equally powerful weapons of mass destruction. Knowing now that both sides had atomic bombs changed relations between the nations. If they were to escalate the ongoing Cold War to a full-out war, they could quite likely destroy the world.
