This new battery was not as much of a discovery as the others noted in this timeline; however, this new variation of the alkaline battery made it much more accessible to consumers and the general market. Lewis Urry used an alkaline electrolyte and a powdered zinc anode increasing surface area of the anode. These batteries were shortly availble in the market in 1959.
