Gustavus was one of the most impactful commanders in the Thirty Years War, as he came into the war (with French and Dutch assistance) at a time when the Protestants were suffering dreadful defeats and the Imperialists were close to winning. The Swedes under his leadership became the saviors of the Protestant people, until the Saxons made a separate peace with the Emperor and the Swedes became just another foreign power on German soil. He was more impactful than any other commander, such as Albert of Wallenstein, because Wallenstein’s leadership never achieved anything concrete in the war, whereas Gustavus’ goals were achieved in the Peace of Westphalia: Protestantism was secured in Germany.
