Aristotle was a philosopher who believed in Empedocles four-element model. He wrote a lot about this and he influenced people to believe in this model. That is why the four-element model was accepted for almost 2000 years. So, for almost 2000 years, Democritus's theory about atoms was forgotten and the four-element model was used.
