The Homestead Strike started when a standing contract between workers and Carnegie steel was due to expire. The workers opened negotiations early by going on strike and eventually the Pinkertons were called in to break the strike. The workers repelled the Pinkertons after a gunfight and federal troops were called in to put down the riot.
