It was discovered during the war that shock treatment should include both whole blood and blood plasma, unlike what was previously thought, blood and serum. The "Blood for Britain" program, introduced in 1940, had had little success with whole blood, so in 1940, the American Red Cross began collecting blood from donors in New York to export the plasma to Great Britain.
