Samuel de Champlain (also known as "Father of New France") was an explorer and navigator who mapped the Great Lakes and founded the fur trading post in Quebec in 1608. Fur was very profitable because France wanted it and used it for their coats. He traded manufacture goods and guns to Indians. He paved the way for other explorers to establish forts throughout the Mississippi River Valley.
