/The Portuguese traded for West African slaves that they sent to sugar plantations on islands off the coast of Africa./ The Portuguese became the first European colonizers to participate heavily in the slave trade. By 1620, Brazil was a sugar colony that used slave labor from Africa. The Brazilians did not only trade for West African slaves, they also traded for West African commodities such as ivory, peppers, textiles, wax, grain, and copper.
