1958 The Argentine Smokestack is Torn Down: The main early industry of the township of Argentine along the Kaw River was the smelting of gold and silver. In 1958, the 187-foot brick Argentine smokestack was torn down. It was located on 22nd and Metropolitan. At one point 700 people were employed at the smelter. The stack was constructed by August R. Meyer, a major stockholder in the company, who was also a well-known park system planner in the area. The Argentine smelter was only in operation for a few years as mining companies decided it was easier to have smelters closer to the mines. The cost to build the smelter was $20,000 and it contained 700,000 bricks. At its zenith, a ton of silver bricks and gold per day were shipped from Argentine to places as far away as India and Japan. p. 89.
