James Chadwick’s discovered neutrons in an experiment where he put beryllium in a chamber with polonium and when the beryllium was struck with alpha rays, the beryllium emitted neutral waves. Chadwick came to the conclusion that this was a neutron and that they have roughly the same mass as protons. There had been talk and belief about a neutral particle but Chadwick's discovery made it official. This discovery helped the creation of the James Chadwick model which has become one of the main models we use today
