The deadline to ratify the amendment was 1982, but it was 3 states short of passing. Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative political activist, strongly opposed the E.R.A, stating it would take away gender-specific privileges enjoyed by women, such as the "dependent wife" benefit under social security.
