Tension had built between two neighboring Islamic empires: the sunni Ottoman Empire, and the Shiite Safavid Dynasty. Conflict ensued, the Ottoman army was equipped with gunpowder technology while the Safavid dynasty was not, rejecting the technology. As a result, the Safavids were defeated, dealing a crippling blow to the empire, but the empire managed to survive.
