500 years before Columbus, Leif Eriksson landed in present day Newfoundland, Canada. They didn't stay very long, and didn't tell the rest of Europe about it, so we didn't learn about this until archaeologists found evidence recently. It is believed that they may have traded with Native Americans, or maybe that the natives didn't want them there so they forced them to leave.
