During the sixteenth century, the region was in a state of brutal warfare between small states, but eventually powerful states emerged towards the end of the century. Eventually, Tokugawa Ieyasu established a military government known as the bafuku, which although intended to be temporary ruled the nation until 1867. This began the Edo period, which thanks to control of the daimyo and of foreign relations, saw remarkable stability and prosperity.
