Slaves brought to the New World via the Middle Passage.** Slaves were first brought primarily to the Caribbean because of the decline of people who could work in the encomienda system.** The first slave in North America was brought to Jamestown in 1619. Slavery hugely increased in North America after Bacon’s Rebellion. Bacon’s Rebellion induced a huge shift from indentured servants to slavery based on the Caribbean. The slaves in North America and the Caribbean were forced to farm cash crops on plantations.
