Nation States were people of a common language and culture united under one government. And due to the population recent population growth nation states looked to expand their power and influence because a nation state’s status were measured by their wealth. The New World was a source of wealth for nation states and thus mercantilism arose. Nation States like Spain also sought to spread their religion. This new incentive for nation states to expand, also ushered in an era of new naval technologies like the caravel, compass, and sextant.
