James Hutton releases his 2 volume book which describes uniformitarianism. He shared his theory that the features of the earth's crust are explained by natural geologic processes (volcanos, etc) over large periods of time.

This ties in with the theory of evolution where geographic barries separate enviroments and cause organisms to evolve and adapt.
