Zedong and his wife Jiang Qing began the Cultural Revolution in attempts to regain his lost influence after the failure of the Great Leap Forward. Zedong shut down the nation's school and mobilized high-school aged Red Guards that instituted Mao Zedong teachings. Those who did not follow his teachings were denounced and were given lower class jobs so they could "abandon their bourgeoisie attitude and become proletariat." This brought China to the brink of chaos, but the military stepped in. Many people were constantly being questioned and falsely denounced. Overall, there was much greater equality under Zedong with an emphasis on literacy rate, health improvements but all which came at a cost. Helped Zedong gain back his influence.
